What are banner ads ?? Banner ads are, as they sound, advertisements. They are generally wide and thin, (banner shaped), thus the name "Banner Ads". There's one at the top of this page now, the advert is not mine, it's an advertisement for somebody else's page or product. Why are you showing someone elses advert ?? In simple terms this is how it works, you've seen the advert at the top of this page, the company who supply the advert know you've seen it as well. Because you've seen this advert, I've now got one "credit". Every time I get TWO credits MY advert gets shown on somebody else's page. So if in 5 minutes time, after you've left this page, somebody else comes along and reads this (plus sees an advert) then very soon my advert will be shown somewhere else on the Internet on somebody else's site. Common terms There are a number of words used in banner advertising that may be confusing to the casual observer, a couple of these terms are explained in the next section, these are "ratio" and "click thru". Two other terms that may be used are "impressions" and "exposures". Both these terms mean one "display" of an advertisement, these terms are normally used in selling and buying advertisements. Thus if I bought 1000 impressions, this means my advert would be displayed (seen) 1000 times. The same applies to exposures. There's no URL address on the banner !! You'll very rarely see the actual address of the site on the banner, this is because the banner adverts are "clickable", this means that if you like the look of whatever you see on the banner, you can simply click anywhere on the banner, and you'll be automatically transported to the site it relates to. So going back to my earlier example, somebody, somewhere on the Internet might be seeing my banner advertisment right now, if they like the sound of "FREE BANNERS" (which is what my banner says), they might just click on it.
