Creating a simple banner with Paintshop Pro
For this tutorial we're going to take a blank banner, add
two clip art pictures, and then some text.
First of all, open the blank banner, and both the clipart
pictures you're going to use. These are mine,
![[Picture]](../images/example3.gif)
I'm going to put the dog at the left hand end of the
banner and the hand at the right. You'll notice that
both the dog and the hand are on a grey background, I don't
want them to show up as being on a grey square, so I need to
alter these two icons. The dog first.
Select the eyedropper tool
from the line of icons along the top of the screen and
place it over the blue colour on the banner. At the right
hand side of the screen, under the two coloured squares, you'll
see four letters with numbers against them, the letters are
R,G,B and I. Ignore the "I" but make a note of the other
three numbers, in my case these are R-0, G-0, B-255.
Decide which icon you're going to alter and have a
careful look at its colours. You need to find a colour
that's NOT being used. In my case I'm altering the dog and
there's no green in it, so I'll use green.
Click on the icon you want to alter. When you've clicked
on the icon you want to alter, click on the top square of the
two coloured squares at the right hand side of the screen,
it looks like this....![[Picture]](../images/colour.gif)
A box will now open containing lots of different
colours, double click on a colour that is NOT being
used in your icon. When you've done this another box will
open, at the right hand side of this box you'll see three
boxes called Red, Green and Blue, these boxes have numbers
in them. Alter the numbers to the numbers you made a note
of earlier.
In my case this was 0,0,255 when you've done this click "Okay"
and then "Okay" again.
Next select the fill tool from the
line of icons, and click in the grey area surrounding your
icon. It should now have a background the same colour as the
area it's going to be placed on.
Do the same for any other icons, move the eyedropper over
the colour it's to be placed on, make a note of the R,G,B
numbers, select the icon you want to place on that colour.
Find an unused colour and alter its Red, Green, Blue to
the numbers you've just noted. Then with the fill tool, fill
in the background. Here are my examples after doing this...

Next click back on the eyedropper tool and click anywhere
on your banner. Select "Colours" from the menu at the top
of the screen, and then select "Increase Colour Depth" from
this list. When the next list appears select "16 Million
Colours".
Click on the first icon you want to place on the banner,
select "Edit" from the menu at the top of the screen and
then "Copy". Click on your banner, select "Edit" from the
top of the screen and then "Paste" and "As New Selection".
Your first icon should now appear on the banner and you
should be able to move it around. Move it to where you want
it and then click to paste it. (If you make a mistake here
select "Edit" from the top menu and then "Undo", you can then
repeat the process.
Repeat the process for your second icon, the banner should
now look like this....
Finally we're going to add some text, in my case it's going
to be "FREE CLIP ART !!". Select the text tool
from the line of icons and then click on the top colour box
of the two at the right hand side of the screen. Select
whatever colour you want your text to be. In my case white.
Next click anyway on your banner and a text box will open
into which you can type your text. You must also select a
font and a size (36 point is massive, 20 point is medium,
10 point is very small). Make sure that the checkbox labelled
"Antialias" is checked.
When you're happy click "Okay" and the text should appear
on your banner, you can move this around until it's in
position. (If the text is not right, select "Edit" then
"Undo").
To paste the text into position click on it with
your RIGHT mouse button. My banner now looks like this.
If you want to get very fancy you can add a drop
shadow, to do this follow adding the text as above but
DON'T RIGHT CLICK to paste the text. The text should still
have moving lines round the outside of it. Select "Image"
then "Special Effects" then "Drop Shadow". You'll have to
experiment with the settings (if it's wrong just click
on "Edit" and then "Undo". For this example below I set
opacity to 100, right and left offset to 2, colour to black
and blur to 2.
Finally we need to save our banner, first of all select
"Colours" from the top menu and then "Decrease Colour Depth"
and select 256 colours. There are two checkboxes labelled
"Nearest Colour" and "Error Diffusion", if your banner looks
wrong when you've decreased the colour select Edit / Undo and
try the other setting.
Finally go to the "File" menu and "Save As", set the type
to "GIF" give it a name and that's it !!
