Numbers
A lot of people ask me what is considered to be a decent ratio of click-thru's
for a banner, it's an impossible question to answer. The main factor is
the content of the site the banner is advertising. If it's advertising a site
full of pictures of women wearing hardly any clothes, then it's going to get
a lot higher click-thru ratio than a site dedicated to the noble art of
stamp collecting (no matter how good or bad the banner are for each).
The second factor is the quality of the banner, your banner reflects your site,
if you've got an awful banner, then people expect to reach an awful site if
they click on it. See the section called "Improving Your Banner" for
more information on this subject.
The final thing I'll say here is that you've got to clock up a lot of displays
to get a decent picture, 1000 displays of an advert is the minimum I'd
recommend before starting to even talk about the subject, 10,000 is better.
I've included a few of my own banners here, with their facts and figures and a
few comments on each, I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions....
Displays - 16226 Click-Thru's - 796 Ratio - 20.4:1 (4.91%)
Out of every 20 people who see this ad, 1 clicks on it, I'd describe
this as a successful banner, it looks good, and the product is
appealing (plus it's got the word FREE in big letters !!).
Displays - 19444 Click-Thru's - 238 Ratio - 81.7:1 (1.22%)
This is an unsuccessful banner, It's supposed to advertise our main site
Banner World, it doesn't say what it's advertising, plus doesn't look
very appealing either. Time to change it.
Displays - 1128 Click-Thru's - 14 Ratio - 80.6:1 (1.24%)
Not much better, this one (to me) is a good banner, but it's not performing
well at all, time to change.
Displays - 16082 Click-Thru's - 590 Ratio - 27.3:1 (3.67%)
Similar to the first banner for the Clip Art Warehouse, but not getting
the same amount of clicks, might try altering it.
