Fading photographs to a background colour
Photographs look very "square" if they've got a different background colour than your page background. This effect "fades" the background colour of your photograph so that it blends in with your page. I want to use this image on my page, my page has a sandy coloured background.

[Picture]

First of all, open your photo and look in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, it should say "16 Million Colours" if it doesn't then select "Colours", then "Increase Colour Depth" then "16 Million Colours". Next using the click on the "Select" tool (next but one to the magnifying glass on the toolbar). Under the tool change the "feather" value to about "20". Draw a box inside your image about where you want the fade to start.

NOTE - THE BOX WON'T APPEAR WHERE YOU'VE DRAWN IT, THIS IS CORRECT !!

Here's mine after I've drawn my box, the box was actually drawn further into the photograph.

Next select "Selections" then "Invert", your image should now look something like this.

Select the "Fill" tool (this looks like a tin of paint tipping over), change the value for "Tolerance" to about "200". Select the colour of your web page from the colour palette on the right (mine's a sandy colour), and then click inside the area selected around your photograph. It should then look like this, finished !! Finally reduce the colours to 256 colours if you want.
