General advice on creating banners
These are a few general guidelines on creating banners,
I don't claim to be a world authority on banner creation but
I think most of the following is pretty sound advice.
Don't lie
It's no use putting FREE PICTURES OF NAKED LADIES !! on a
banner when your site is actually a flower shop. True a lot of people
will visit your site, but you'll get a mailbox full of rude
e-mails, and nobody will buy any flowers (and getting
more people to buy flowers is the object of the whole
exercise).
You can be liberal with the truth, THE BEST FLOWER SHOP
ON THE INTERNET, GIVE YOUR LOVED ONE A TREAT or
CLICK HERE FOR SOMETHING THAT SMELLS PRETTY are probably
acceptable !!
Fonts
The font or typeface you use on a banner can say a lot, take
this example,
![[Picture]](../images/example9.gif)
It's very pretty, and might be suited to a flower shop but
it's hard to read, stick to a slightly simpler font, like this,

The second example is still fancy, and still suited to a
flower shop, but it's easier to read. You've got a split
second to grab the readers attention and if they can't read
what you've written they'll not bother giving it a second
look.
Take another example, this one's for an Army Surplus store,
the font is perfect for the job,

Very easy to read and well suited to its task.
Background colour
The background colour you use is also important, the following
example is an advert for a night club, it's intended to look
a bit like a neon sign, so it makes sense to use a black
background and a bright colour for the text.

Another good example suited to a black background
is something ghostly like the
following, take note also of the font which is intended
to look like dripping blood, so it's perfect in red.

Choose your wording carefully
Take the following example,
![[Picture]](../images/exam14.gif)
The colour of the background is fine, as are the little
pictures but there's just too much text, we can break the
text up a little, and highlight important points, by making
bits of the text a different colour.

Still too much text though, all I want to say is the fact
that I've got free clip art, and I want it to look fun !!
So this is the banner I finally decided on, simple and
straight to the point, fun colours and a fun font.
