Cut Out's
This effect makes your words look as though they are cut
into your banner. First of all open your blank banner (a
dark plain colour is best). Increase the colour depth
to 16 million colours.

Select white as the foreground colour and select a font
and type size. Type your text and apply to the banner, but
DON'T right click to set the type in position.

Next select "Image" then "Special Effects" then "Cutout".
The "Fill Interior" box should be ticked, set the opacity
to 255, blur to 2, Interior Colour should be set to
"Foreground Colour", Shadow Colour to Black and horizontal
and vertical offset to 2. When you're happy with the effect
click okay and right click on the text to set it into position.
Finally decrease the colour depth to 256 colours.

Three Layers
This effect makes text look a bit more impressive, open your
blank banner and increase the colours to 16 million. Choose
a font and a size for the font. Select black as your foreground
colour and apply and centre your text, DON'T right click to
set it into position.
Choose "Image", "Special Effects" then "Add Drop Shadow".
Set the options to opacity - 180, colour - black, blur - 8,
horizontal offset - 1, vertical offset - 4. Select "Okay"
and when you're happy paste the text into position with your
right mouse button. It should look like this.

Finally, add the text in the colour you want on top, the
black text should be very slightly showing to the right and
bottom of the text you're now applying.
